The sleeper arrived on time at 0715, so I was in Krakow early. The weather was awful when I arrived; heavy drizzle. I’d signed up for a walking tour of Nowa Huta, which was a planned city built in the communist era for the adjacent steelworks. Before that I’d got a couple of hours to kill, which I spent wandering around and getting breakfast.
It was a short tram ride to the starting point of the walk. The guide was excellent, and talked about Poland’s history under communism. The neighbourhood itself is apparently quite desirable now – it’s well connected to the centre and is quite peaceful and green.
The tour ended up at a church in Nowa Huta, which was finally finished in the 70’s, after struggles with the communist authorities. It was a very striking design inside and out
After a quick nap (I didn’t sleep that well on the train – it stopped quite a few times in the night for passengers), I went into town for a quick look at the castle:
