We took the Bernina Railway today, ending up in Schaffhausen, close to the German border.
The railway went though stunning scenery. We stopped of en route at Pontrenesa, and had a look round the village.
An advert on the train for the railway museum also led us astray for a couple of hours.
Landquart was nice enough. We walked back to the previous station south before continuing northwards on the train.
We stopped at the RHB railway museum. This was pretty good; a lot of random things in the basement, and more structured exhibits on the history of the railway upstairs. There was also a model railway.
We changed for a normal train at Chur, and then headed to Slaffhausen for the night.
The trains were all on time to within a minute or so, so that Swiss stereotype was true. The one about it being expensive is also true. We’re staying at a not great place that, cost about the same as our room in Tirano but is about 1/3 the size of our room in there and doesn’t come with breakfast either.
We made the most of my interrail day, and F’s swiss railways day pass by heading to Rheinfall after dinner. As it was late, they’d stopped charging for entry 🙂
What stunning scenery; I’m amazed at 100 wagons.
That’s all whetting my appetite for a trip on the Bernina.

Well worth a trip. The Europe By Rail book was spot on. Definitely not worth paying for the panorama coaches. The normal bit of the train was much quieter too, and we could hop on and off as we pleased
